A footballer scanning the pitch for an unmarked teammate uses broad-external attention. A gymnast mentally rehearsing a vault sequence before the run-up uses narrow-internal. The skill is not just being focused. It is shifting between these modes at the right moment, what researchers call attentional flexibility. An esports player in a MOBA match cycles through broad scanning (minimap awareness, team positioning), narrow-external targeting (aiming a skill shot), and narrow-internal decision-making (cooldown tracking, item build) within seconds.
Problems start not when attention wanders to nothing, but when it locks onto the wrong quadrant for the task, or when it turns inward at exactly the moment it should be pointing outward.
Why Athletes Lose Focus When It Matters Most
The most common focus failure we see is not distraction from outside. It is distraction from inside: the athlete's own thoughts pulling attention away from the task and onto themselves.
Sport psychologist Rich Masters called this reinvestment: when pressure rises, the brain drags a well-learned, automatic skill back into conscious, step-by-step processing. Instead of letting the serve happen, the athlete starts monitoring every joint angle, every muscle contraction, every micro-movement. The conscious brain, which is slower and more analytical, tries to micromanage a process that runs better without supervision. The result is what athletes and coaches call choking under pressure: the skill is still there, but conscious interference jams the signal.
In our coaching work, we see this often with athletes who perform beautifully in training but tighten up in competition. One athlete we worked with, an elite-level racket-sport player, had a serve that was smooth, fluid and rhythmic in practice. In tournaments, it fell apart. Build A Pre-Performance Routine
A pre-performance routine gives the brain a predictable, low-effort sequence to run right when uncertainty about the result is highest. Research on routine use in sport shows that consistent routines reduce anxiety, narrow attentional focus to relevant cues, and buffer against the kind of internal chatter that leads to reinvestment.
In our coaching work, we emphasise that the routine is not superstition. It is a focus-management tool. Before every repetition, every serve, every free throw, the athlete performs the same sequence: a breath, a physical reset (bouncing the ball, adjusting the grip), and a lock onto the external cue. The routine serves as a buffer between the conscious brain and the automatic skill. It gives conscious thought enough structure that it does not go looking for something else to control.
Use Grounding And Sensory Anchoring
When what-if thinking takes over, the fastest way back to the present is through the senses, not through reasoning. We train athletes to use sensory anchoring during warm-up and between points: feel your feet on the ground, notice the texture of the ball in your hand, the weight of the racket, the ambient sound of the court. This is a form of mindfulness applied in real time: grounding the mind in what is physically present rather than what might go wrong.

In our work, we build this into drills: simulating scoreboard pressure (three points down, final set), adding crowd noise through speakers, having a teammate act as a provocative opponent, or filming the session to raise self-consciousness. These are not punishments. They are focus reps under load. Each one teaches the brain to hold external attention while the nervous system is running hot, and over time, the athlete's processing speed under pressure improves because the conditions no longer feel foreign.
How Coaches And Parents Can Support An Athlete's Focus
The most common mistake coaches and parents make after a focus lapse is asking "what were you thinking?" or "why did you miss that?" Both questions force the athlete to look inward, which is exactly the direction that caused the lapse. They reignite the analytical monitoring that was already interfering with the skill.
From our experience, the better move is what we call calm curiosity: guiding the athlete toward the next task instead of dissecting the last mistake.
